rant: learn to drive

Driving home today (well J was actually driving but I was in the car) a silly old woman pulled out from a driveway causing what was only, fortunately for us all, a minor crash. Here's my illustration of what happened -->
I know, my artistic abilities are mind blowing, but nevermind, the important thing to note is that she was clearly at fault - trying to move into the third lane whilst we were driving through it.

Once we pulled over to assess damage/collect insurance info the ridiculous woman proceeded to claim that it was entirely our fault as the lane states KEEP CLEAR, and that since the first two lanes were full, leaving a gap for her through the clear zone, we should not have passed through the KEEP CLEAR section. I don't understand what she expected really, keep clear does not mean give way, and you don't need to stop for it unless traffic is full up until the first side of the zone. Maybe she wants everyone to fly over that part so that the road can be clear for her to pull out without even looking at potential oncoming traffic.

Even after we explained this to her she maintained that we were at fault and refused to negotiate on the issue. As soon as we got home we called the insurance company who immediately confirmed that it was she who was negligent but seemingly she has also received the same information because she is not answering her phone...

Oh, noone was injured and no severe damage done - just a scratch/dent all the way along the side of our car. She had better pick up the stupid phone or we shall be calling the police.

ranting complete :)

melbourne cup

I don't know anything about horse racing. I try to understand it, really, I do, but I just don't get how you're meant to pick the winner.

That's not to say, however, that I don't enjoy the Cup. I love the atmosphere that exists when everyone communes around the office TV with a glass of wine or a beer, and the joy of picking up $6 from your third place in the company sweeps.

This year I won't get to experience that though, because Community and Family day (ACT Public Holiday) conveniently falls on the same day, call it coincidence if you will. So guess where I will be... at home, by myself, studying. I know, exciting isn't it? I will permit myself a study break at 3pm to watch the race but it just won't be the same without a sweepstakes ticket and a room full of colleagues.

Incidentally, my tips:

Roman Emperor

plus Ista Kareem and Shocking

oh and I also kind of like the names Allez Wonder and Zavite...

As I said, not quite my area of expertise!
